The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a lens that is geared specifically for digital SLR Canon models. It weighs around 14 ounces so it can be making it lighter than other ultra-wide zoom lenses. It is best paired with the EOS 20D and Digital Rebel units since it uses an EF-S lens mount. Other entry-level DSLR cameras can use this lens too but it is important to remember that certain other models like the Canon 1D, 1Ds, 5D, and 10D cannot take advantage of these types of lenses. It also has three Aspherical lens elements along with a Super-UD element although this contributes more to the image quality rather than the overall construction. Although pricey, this type of lens is something that should be handled with care.

Thanks to these lens elements, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a solid performer on its main purposes. Canon puts this in the 16-35mm zoom category so the wide-angle coverage is very sufficient. The focal range allows various perspective shots to be taken so every subject has its own unique expression. For instance, photographers can go very close to the subject in order to differentiate itself with other visible objects nearby. It is all up to the photographer to come up with some creative shots.

Even if the subject is small measuring 3.6 x 5.4 inches, the lens can actually fill the entire frame for a clear close up shot. It is possible to perform close-focusing as close as 9.5 inches which is rather impressive for the size of the lens.

AF speed and performance is superior as expected with a lens of this price and adjusting the manual focus is very simple. The key feature is the USM ring which is of higher quality than other lenses and allows better precision while keeping things speedy. A full manual override can be used at any time so professionals can get more creative.

Because the lens has Super Spectra coatings, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM does a good job in suppressing flare and ghosting. If the optional lens hood is equipped, the flare is handled even better. When wide open, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM does better than expected with only the corners showing signs of softening when 22mm focal length is used. However, this focal length is best in reducing the chromatic aberration as it increases whenever the focal length decreases where it maxes out at 10mm focal length.

The geometric distortion is also on the low end where the zero distortion point hits in the 15-16mm range. When increased to 22mm, it moves to 0.2% and can go to 0.5% when decreased to 10mm.

Conclusion

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is not really a lens for every professional photographer since it is not meant for all types of DSLR cameras. However, intermediate photographers will find a lot of uses for this lens. Standard lenses will still be required for casual photography since the max length is still short for plain usage. It takes a bit of practice too to get used such a unique photo length but the lightweight build does not add too much difficulty when it comes to handling. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is priced at around $850 which is a bit much for a lens that won’t be used all the time but the optics are good enough to rival some of the prime lenses out there and some online areas may sell the lens for a bit cheaper. Once mastered, some real wide angle shots can be taken at will.

• “This lens feels sturdy and is amazingly wide especially considering the 1.6X factor of the XT which makes lenses 1.6X narrower than normal. So basically you have a 16-35 lens. This is not really the best range for just everyday shooting so you really have to have a goal in mind when using this lens. Landscapes that include close-ups along with lots of background are the main things that I use this lens for. I have also used it for forest interior, sunrise/sunset, and indoor shooting. • “This lens is not cheap, but it’s well worth the money. It indeed deserves the famous “L” designation. I use a Canon EOS 20D and it works wonderfully with the camera. It’s quiet, fast and fairly light. Best of all, it shoots extremely sharp photos. • “This is one terrific lens! It solves the problem of wide-angle coverage in the 1.6 FOVCF very nicely. As others have pointed out, the mechanical build and optical quality (with 3 Aspherical elements and 1 Super-UD) probably deserve an “L” stamp and a red ring. This lens appears to be of almost identical build, quality and size as the EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM. Even uses the same 77mm filter size as most of the L’s. Overall sharpness is excellent, with maybe a little softness towards the corners at 10mm, but I’ve seen comparisons with other ultra-wide zooms like the Sigma and the Canon blows them away! CA is well controlled too. There is slight Barrel and Pincushion distortions present at the low and high ends, but less than would be expected for a lens this wide.
