Canon Speedlite 320EX
The brand new Canon Speedlite 320EX is in a class of its own. Having no predecessor, this flash sits between the Canon Speedlite 270EX II and the Canon Speedlite 430EX II.
Design & Features
What the Canon Speedlite 270EX II does not have, the Canon Speedlite 320EX makes up for by having not only a wireless slave capability but also the ability to participate in one of three flash groups and also operate on one of four transmission channels, just as its other counterpart, the Canon Speedlite 430EX II. Using the “Slave” setting is as easy as sliding the power switch.
While the 320EX cannot be used as a master flash, it can remotely fire a DSLR. A button on the side of the 320EX will allow it to act as a wireless remote controller that is compatible with several cameras in Canon’s range.
The new flash release button is similar to the Canon Speedlite 270EX II‘s, allow a 2-second delay, giving photographers time to reposition the flash as desired.
The brand new LED light on the front of the flash makes for a constant light designed for use as a video fill light, making it ideal for video recording or as a modeling light or AF assist beam during Live View shooting. While the LED light is not the brightest, it will light a full frame 50mm angle of view for about 3.5 hours and it certainly helps with closer subjects.
The LED light has two modes – manual and auto. In Auto mode, the LED will be used for AF assist in low light conditions.
As with the 270EX II, the Canon Speedlite 320EX is able to bounce light at 0°, 60°, 75° or 90° tilt. In addition, this 320EX can rotate its flash head, like the 430EX II.
Finally, the 320EX sports the higher grade hot shoe locking mechanism of the higher end flashes such as the Canon Speedlite 580EX II, a good overall build quality and utilizes 4 AA batteries.
Bottom Line
Sitting in second place from the bottom, above the Canon Speedlite 270EX II, this Canon Speedlite 320EX certainly makes for a great tool considering its combination of features, taking from both the 270EX II and the 430EX II.
