Canon Speedlite 270EX

Canon has made a range of camera flash devices to appeal to all users. From the professional top end to the cheaper entry level end for the keen home enthusiast, the Canon Speedlite 270EX is a perfect example of this low level technology, so just how does this unit present itself in terms of performance and value for money?

Design

This is one of their compact flash designs and features just the flashlight itself on the front. This makes it much shorter and more compact with a smaller flash surface area than the higher end of the Canon family; however, this is not to say that the Canon Speedlite 270EX is not a good looking small flash. It most certainly ticks that box. It features a traditional metal slide-on clip unit and is finished in matte black. The size of the unit makes it really portable and means that you can slip it into a pocket or have a lighter weight bag to carry rather than a massive kit bag.

Actual user review:
“I needed to get more flash than was produced by the stock flash on my Canon EOS Rebel. I did not want a large, heavy (4 or more batteries), mounted on the camera. This unit solved the problem! It only uses 2-AA batteries and makes a big flash for a smaller unit. I’m a realtor and it fills the room for color rich pictures. I love the bounce feature and find I’m using it whenever I have a white ceiling in a room. I’m not a photo artist but this Speedlite in combination with my 10 to 20 wide angle lense has helped me to produce wonderful listing photos. I love the compliments from the other agents in my office!” – A.L.Rusca (NJ,USA)

Performance

For a compact level entry unit the Canon Speedlite 270EX certainly packs quite a punch and does not skimp on features, far outweighing the functionality of built in digital camera flashes. Taking just two batteries, standard AA size, either disposable or rechargeable, this flash has ‘zoom head’ technology that gives excellent distribution of light and can even be used in ‘bounce head’ mode which means you can use the flash to bounce the light off the ceiling which casts a more natural light fall and gives the pictures more depth and a gentler, softer tone. For this flash you are looking at a maximum guide number of 27m. That is pretty impressive for a flash this size.

Again as is standard on the newer Canon flash units, provided it is attached to a compatible digital camera, you can control the flash via the LED screen on the back of the camera, which makes light work of setting up your shot. It boasts a fast recycle time for continuous shooting; however, in reality this may be faster than some of its predecessors but is actually about 4 seconds which could seem like an age if you are expecting a model to hold a pose, or even if you are just trying to capture a baby’s first smile. The moment could be gone before the flash resets.

Bottom Line

Whist we don’t like to harp on about the price, this really does clinch this deal, as the functionality really is all there. You would actually expect to pay a lot more than just over $150 to get a flash of this quality and with this much functionality which is also very easy to use, and no you haven’t misread it, that really is all it costs. From the small professional to those of you who just like to make more of your family snaps, the Canon Speedlite 270EX really represents value for money and should definitely make it to your shortlist.

Average User Rating:

  • “The 270 EX is great! I bought it to use mainly with my Canon G10 but I can also use it with my Canon 5D. This size is great for easy portability. I find myself using it more than my 430 EX. I wish it could rotate 180 degrees, but that is the trade to obtain the ease of use and portability.” – J.Estes (USA)
  • “This is my first external flash and so far, it’s lived up to my expectations. Given the low price, it’s definitely an inexpensive way to gain experience taking flash photography. In addition to the attractive price, it also extends and angles allowing for bounce lighting. Buy this flash if you’re looking for a lightweight addition to your kit and are unsure about forking out the big bucks.” – J.C.Morris (Denmark)
