Canon EOS Rebel T3i
A year from the launch of the widely popular Canon EOS Rebel T2i, electronics giant Canon has introduced the Canon EOS Rebel T3i.
The Canon EOS Rebel T3i is essentially the Canon EOS Rebel T2i with an articulated screen, while incorporating some amazing new features that would suit beginner DSLR users perfectly.
Design
The Canon T3i looks a lot like the Canon EOS 60D. From the grip that feels leathery to the usual suspects from shutter button, IR remote port, self-timer lamp, flash release button, lens release button to depth-of-field preview button.
The top of the Canon T3i will reveal two new buttons – the Display and ISO button. The new position of the Display button allows users to turn off the rear LCD display easily when they are about to use the optical viewfinder, minimizing night blindness.
The highlight of the Canon T3i is its brand new 3-inch vari-angle screen whose specifications match those of the Canon EOS 60D’s LCD. This 1,040,000-dot resolution scratch-resistant fluorine coating and ClearView display technology provides users with a remarkably crisp image no matter where they are.
A Menu button and Info. button sit on the top left of the rear of the camera, where the Display button used to be.
The Live View mode button is now right beside the viewfinder and the same button is used to start and stop recording when in Movie mode. The Canon T3i allows users to capture still images and even autofocus while capturing video.
Features
The Canon T3i did not get a new sensor or image processor. In fact, when compared with the Canon EOS Rebel T2i, they own the exact same image sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor.
Armed with Peripheral Illumination Correction to reduce vignetting, just like the brand new Canon EOS Rebel T3, this camera will allow users to customize the amount of correction for each lens mounted on the camera.
Its 9-point focusing with a central cross-type f/2.8 focus point and eight single-axis points is similar to the Canon EOS 60D’s but the Canon EOS 60D has AF points that are all cross-type, making them sensitive to both horizontal and vertical detail.
Just as the Canon 60D, this Canon T3i owns Canon’s latest metering system with a 63-zone iFCL sensor and an expanded sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 12,800. ISO Expansion can be enabled through a Custom Function setting.
The new Auto+ mode is one of the highlight of this camera. This function is similar to the Smart Auto function on most Canon PowerShot cameras and it utilizes the EOS Scene Detection Technology, combining Auto Exposure, Autofocus, Auto White Balance, Auto Lighting Optimizer, and Picture Style Auto into one smart exposure mode.
The Canon T3i gives users the best excuse to use the Live View mode with its all new swiveling LCD screen, allowing users to composes shots from various odd angles, even if Live View mode does burn through battery life.
Most of all, users can now capture video in Full HD and make use of the Video Digital Zoom and Video Snapshot functions.
Other features found on the Canon EOS Rebel T3i are audio level control, creative filters such as Soft Focus, Grainy Black & White, Toy Camera effect, Miniature Effect and Fisheye mode, Multi Aspect modes and a HDMI output.
Bottom Line
While the Canon EOS Rebel T3i is not much of an upgrade from the Canon EOS Rebel T2i, it is a great choice for folks who might have been considering the Canon EOS 60D for its swiveling screen and more advanced Movie modes.
Considering the Canon T3i sports the same image sensor and image processor as the Canon 60D, folks who prefer a larger viewfinder, a more sophisticated AF system and faster continuous shooting mode, the Canon 60D would prove to be your camera.
However, if you do not mind a slightly smaller viewfinder, a smaller camera that could be more handy and 3.7 fps in continuous shooting mode, the Canon T3i would be just the camera for you!
